From Olives to Apples: Supper club brings refugee stories and global food to Ledbury
Stories and Supper is a Supper Club that aims to bring together local volunteers, refugees and dinner guests to build a more inclusive community through sharing food and stories.
The supper club, based in London, founded by a Ledbury resident, is bringing its unique mix of food and stories from behind the migration headlines to a one-off event in Ledbury.
Herefordshire may not seem like a very obvious place for refugee resettlement but around 60 Syrian refugees have been welcomed to the county over the past couple of years under the vulnerable persons resettlement scheme. Many of these families have found a community that has embraced them, despite a lack of cultural diversity in the area.
The suppers give refugee chefs the chance to cook for paying guests. The evenings provide a space for refugee and migrant storytellers, poets and musicians to share their experiences of migration.
One of the chefs for this event is Shahnaz who fled from her violent marriage in Bangladesh. She was helped by the Red Cross and in turn started cooking for them as a volunteer. She will be bringing her unique taste of Hyderabadi cuisine to the supper.
Founder of Stories and Supper Rebecca Tully says:
“The reason I decided to bring Stories and Supper to Ledbury was because I was struck by the similarities of stories that have woven through rural England over the years, and the stories I hear from people who've migrated from other rural areas around the globe.
We all see the negative headlines in our newsagents the animated chats I see outside Boots with the Big Issue Seller, and the great work of the Ledbury Refugee Support Group seem to tell a different story"I'm hoping the supper will create a space where we share the stories that matter - and a space where people can ask questions without fear. If people are curious about why people move to this country and how the UK can shoulder immigration, this is the chance to discuss this openly.”
Local storytellers will join the Stories & Supper team to entertain with music from around the world, tales of migration and a sumptuous three course vegetarian meal in the beautiful community room of Canon Frome Court. The event will also welcome former Herefordshire Writer in Residence, Sara-Jane Arbury who is going to perform poetry.
The audience will also hear the story of Seliman from Sudan who had to leave his home and travel for many months across the world. Some ‘lighter’ entertainment will come from Syrian Abdul who will use stand-up comedy to tell his story.
Most of us are familiar with the act of breaking bread together, where friendships are forged and relationships deepened over food. This is the aim of these supper clubs to bring people together to find out what they have in common rather than what sets them apart.
Stories and Supper: Tales from Home and Afar will take place on Saturday, 27 October, 2018 7:30pm - 10:30pm
Canon Frome Court, Canon Frome, Ledbury, Herefordshire HR8 2TD
